What is Javascript?
Javascript popular scripting language that is widely supported in Web browsers and other Web tools. It adds interactive functions to HTML pages, which are otherwise static, since HTML is a display language, not a programming language. JavaScript is easier to use than Java, but not as powerful and deals mainly with the elements on the Web page. On the client, JavaScript is maintained as source code embedded into an HTML page.

A scripting language is a simple programming language used to write an executable list of commands, called a script. A scripting language is a high-level command language that is interpreted rather than compiled, and is translated on the fly rather than first translated entirely.

Want a Cookie with that? What is a cookie?
According to TechWeb's Encyclopedia, a cookie is a small piece of data (usually 1 KB) created by a Web server that is stored on a user's computer. It provides a way for a Web site to keep track of a user's patterns and preferences and, with the cooperation of the Web browser, to store them on the user's own hard drive.

"The popular rumors about Web cookies describe them as programs that can scan your hard drive and gather information about you including:
passwords, credit card numbers, and a list of the software on your computer. None of this is close to the truth.
A cookie is a short piece of data, not code, which is sent from a Web server to a Web browser when that browser visits the server's site or visits a specific page on the web site.
The developers of the site will decide when they need to store information in cookie format if at all.

The cookie is stored on the user's machine, but it is not an executable program and cannot do anything to your machine.

What a relief, huh?
Should I disable cookies in my browser?
This is a personal choice. Both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer give you the option to accept cookies, to deny them, or to be notified when cookies are being used on a Web site.

To take advantage of this option in Internet Explorer 5.0, go to Tools | Internet Options | Security. In Netscape Communicator 4.06, go to Edit | Preferences | Advanced.

You should note that if you choose to disable cookies, it can be more of a hassle than it's worth. By doing so, you may be denied access to many Web sites (often you will see a notice when you visit the site that informs you to return with cookies "enabled" if you want to visit the site).
